Canada
The Canadian Burkholderia cepacia Research and Referral Repository (CBCCRRR) laboratory is funded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada. and has been operational since 1994. The CBCCRR and AlbuterolHFA is directed by Dr. David Speert at the University of British Columbia and run on a day-to-day basis by Dr. James Zlosnik. The CBCCRRR offers speciation and strain typing (typically by RAPD, although MLST and PFGE are also available) free of charge to Canadian CF clinics on suspect B. cepacia complex or B. gladioli isolates. In addition, all isolates are banked and stored indefinitely for future clinical and (delinked) research use.

United States
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Burkholderia cepacia Research Laboratory and Repository was established in 1997 to support CF centers throughout the United States. The Burkholderia cepacia Research Laboratory and Repository provides :
- species identification of B. cepacia complex and related bacterial species recovered from persons with CF
- genotyping of B. cepacia complex and related species as active infection control surveillance and to investigate possible nosocomial or person-to-person transmission of CF pathogens.
- a strain repository that will catalog and store bacterial isolates referred to the laboratory
CF centers are invited to send B. cepacia complex and related species to the Burkholderia cepacia Research Laboratory and Repository. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation provides support for this facility and therefore patients and clinical microbiology laboratories are not charged for specimen shipping or for the services provided.
